Tanks In Kenya

NB: THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS ARE NOT APPLICABLE FOR UNDERGROUND TANKS AND SEPTIC TANKS. PLEASE REFER TO YOUR SUPPLIER FOR INSTRUCTIONS/ GUIDELINES FOR THE SAME

Placing the Tank

If Installing Tank on the ground, the foundation should be level, firm and stable and wider than the diameter of the tank. Ensure that the ground is capable of supporting the weight of the tank when full (1ltr of water is equal to 1kg). If in doubt of soil stability consult a professional engineer for advice.

Do not install the tank over buried pipes, cables or any other utility connections which may require servicing or maintenance.

If installing Tank on a Stand, ensure that the stand is properly mounted on an approved surface and is designed to carry the weight of the tank when full. Support slats should be no further than 25mm apart and the stand base should be wider than the tank base.

The surface of the site should be compacted and free from sharp objects or stones. Ensure that the tank is at the centre of the foundation and no part of the tank is protruding outside.

Inlet & Outlet Plumbing

There are specially designed mounting areas for Inlet & Outlet plumbing. Drilling should be done with a drilling machine and hole-saw at these specified locations only, and care should be taken when drilling the corresponding hole size.

Do not make a hole with a hot rod. Please use only appropriate fittings and make sure that all joints are well sealed and watertight with no light penetration.

All plumbing from the outlet must be well supported. If not, this may cause water leakage and damage to the tank.

Pipe work for tanks on stands must be supported by the stand and not the tank. Insert a length of flexible hose to absorb shocks and movement when pipe work is exposed and over long distances.

Always provide an overflow and drain away from the foundation to avoid erosion.

Because polyethylene water tanks expand when full, plumbing to the tank MUST be flexible. All plumbing attached to the tank must be done properly with all connections free from stress. All drilling and plumbing should be completed prior to filling the tank with water.

Water Pumps

DO NOT install water pumps directly to the side of the tank. The water pump and its motor must be self supported on its own mount and connected via flexible hose to isolate any vibration or movement by the pumping unit.

The tank outlet areas and its fittings must not be stressed by the weight of the water pump, motor or plumbing.
